Lebron_James_MVP_2010A second straight MVP award for LeBron James becomes official this afternoon when the Akron native accepts the trophy in his hometown again.

Saturday, James called winning the honor two straight years “another humbling experience for myself.”

James will become the 10th man to receive the MVP trophy in back-to-back seasons when Commissioner David Stern presents it to him in the University of Akron’s Rhodes Arena.

“It’s really hard to kind of grasp, honestly,” James said before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. “You put in a lot of hard work as an individual, then you get an opportunity to showcase your talent on the floor every night and do it with the teammates you love and do it in the city that you love.”

What really hits James is to know he’s in such exclusive company of back-to-back winners. Steve Nash was the last in 2006, and some of the others in the last 25 years include Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

“It’s great to be in that class … guys that won it back-to-back or have won MVPs, period,” James said. “To be in those books is great.”

Comes and goes

Talking before the game, LeBron James said his strained right elbow has “gotten a lot better since the last game.” A numbing sensation in the elbow in the final seconds of his last game forced James to shoot a free throw left-handed. He said he has not experienced anything like that since, though occasional sharp pains in the elbow “come and go.” Aside from the sleeve he’s been wearing and maybe a tape job underneath that, James didn’t plan to wear anything else on his right elbow.

Getting up there

Coach Doc Rivers says the Celtics won’t hide from the fact that they are an old team. “We’re just going to bring our canes, step out and see what we can do with them,” Rivers joked before Game 1.

The Celtics have five players with at least 12 years experience in the league. Kevin Garnett, Michael Finley and Rasheed Wallace are wrapping up their 15th season. Ray Allen is completing his 14th. Paul Pierce is the youngest in the group with 12. Rivers was asked if it bothers when people say the Celtics are too old to win. “It bothers me, the win part,” he said. “The old is true.”

Home sweet home

Both teams held serve at home in 2008 when the Cavs and Boston met in the conference semifinals. The Celtics won the decisive Game 7. The Cavs have home court advantage this time, but Boston was one of six teams to beat them this season at The Q.

“I think they believe they can win in our building and we believe we can win in their building,” Rivers said. “We believe we can win in their building. That’s the way you have to think.”

24-second clock

Eight of the NBA’s top 18 active scorers are playing in this series, including four of the top eight. Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James and Antawn Jamison are the Cavs in the top 18, while the Celtics are Garnett, Allen, Pierce, Finley and Wallace. They have collectively scored 156,921 points in their careers in the regular season. … Former Cavalier All-Star forward Larry Nance, Browns Pro Bowl kicker returner Josh Cribbs and singer Usher were among the fans at Saturday’s game.
