Canada’s Crosby gear was Russia-bound but found!

By

Crosby gear found; stick was Russia-bound Glove was in teammate’s bag, stick in shipment bound for Russia March 11, 2010 Comments on this story (3) Kevin McGran The case of Sidney Crosby’s missing stick and glove has been solved. And though its resolution involves a Russian destination, a Toronto depot, a dash of international intrigue and an unwitting friend, it really is more a comedy of errors than a whodunnit novel. The glove and stick Crosby used to score the overtime goal that won Canada gold in Olympic hockey were packed in the wrong places. “I’m grateful to everyone who took the time and effort to get my equipment back for me,”

Crosby wrote on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ website. “These items are irreplaceable and I’m happy to have them back.” It took a massive effort involving equipment managers, Olympic committee officials and Olympic  partners to find them. The glove was the easier of the two to find. Crosby’s friend and Olympic teammate Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins had it. Bergeron ended up with three gloves instead of two when his equipment was packed. The stick, now, that was tricky. It was inadvertently included in a shipment bound for the International Ice Hockey Federation for a display in St. Petersburg, Russia. The IIHF located the shipment and showed photographs of the stick to Crosby, who confirmed it was the game stick. Crosby’s hockey pants, along with the stick Jarome Iginla used to pass to him, the net he scored on and the flag he carried in celebration, will be displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame from Friday. There’s no word what Crosby will do with his stick and gloves, but the Hall of Fame wants them. “They would complete the display,” said Hall of Fame spokeswoman Kelly Masse. “We would love to have them here.” After scoring the overtime goal against the U.S., Crosby threw off his gloves, stick and mouthguard in celebration. Hockey Canada found the mouthguard first, then a fan returned one glove. Reebok CCM Hockey had offered a $10,000 reward for the safe return of the missing items. Company vice-president Len Rhodes will announce Thursday how the award will be distributed. This isn’t the first time some of Crosby’s gear has vanished. In 2005, his jersey went missing after Canada’s gold medal win over Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. It was found in a mailbox outside a post office in Lachute, Que.
