History of Basketball

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

There was a period of time, just a few short decades ago, that not a single company was producing basketball cards – not even industry giant Topps. In 1986, the Fleer Company produced Michael Jordan’s definitive rookie card. As Jordan’s on court career reached new levels of the stratosphere, so too did the value of his rookie card. Basketball card collectors began to re-evaluate the long forgotten art of collecting and created a huge demand for not only new basketball card products, but vintage cards as well.

The Vintage Years

The earliest basketball cards can be traced to the legendary 1933 Sport Kings series, a multi-sport set from the Goudey Gum Company. The set included four basketball players of the era; Eddie Burke, Nat Holman, Joe Lapchick, and Ed Wachter. It would be another 15 years before another basketball set was made and it was in 1948 that Bowman produced its first, and only, hardwood set. This set includes one of the most valuable basketball cards in existence, the George Mikan rookie card. A 72-card, full color set that includes five additional hall of fame players, the ’48 Bowman set is a holy grail for many hoops collectors.

March’s Hottest Basketball Cards on Earth

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Blake Griffin, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Playoff Contenders Patches, National Treasures highlight our look at the top 25 hottest basketball cards and Top 5 hottest basketball card products on the planet from the first days of March.

CarmeloAnthony KNICKSPic1 Hottest Basketball Cards on the Planet: MarchOne of the greatest catalysts for sparking or in most cases “re-sparking” interest in a player’s cards is a trade. Often times fans can become fatigued with their favorite team’s current roster, so when a trade happens for better or for worse, it at the very least gives collectors of that team a fresh face to chase. This is the case and then some with Carmelo Anthony, whose cards have seen an epic boost in interest since being traded to the largest sports market on Earth (New York).

NEAL GRIFF CONTENDERS Hottest Basketball Cards on the Planet: MarchIt may seem like a small thing, but 26-year old Spurs rookie Gary Neal made his first ever appearance on a basketball card in 2010-11 Playoff Contenders Patches, which released last week. The Spurs are the Patriots of the basketball card world, which means Spurs fans are always thirsty for another contributor to their favorite team’s dynasty.

Not sure what to make of this, but a friend who recently saw Blake Griffin take on the Timberwolves told me he was shocked to see the hottest player in the hobby taking plays off and ignoring Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro. My friend commented that Griffin reminded him of Randy Moss -  plays when he wants to play and is obsessed with making the highlight reel play. Since then, I’ve heard whispers about this very same issue, so apparently he wasn’t alone in noticing this.

Who knows, could end up being nothing, but it’s still disappointing to hear. Regardless, the dunk champ’s cards continue to be the hottest in the hobby. Even though Griffin’s rookie cards are from the 2009-10 basketball card season, his 2010-11 Contenders Patches Rookie of the Year Contenders Autographs have been heating things up on eBay.

Lebron HeatOn July 8th, LeBron James sent shockwaves through the basketball community when he decided to take his talents to South Beach, trading in his number 23 Cavs jersey in for a number 6 Miam Heat jersey.

Along with the number change, LeBron has decided to change his signature as well. Since he signed on with Upper Deck Authenticated in 2003, James had always signed his first name with a looping “L” that closely resembled the start of his uniform No. 23. Now he’s tapered that with a more definable starting letter and added “#6” to each autograph.

MIAMI — It didn’t sound like LeBron James was hurt all that much by the bitter rant directed toward him by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert.

It actually worked in James’ favor. It made him feel even better about his tough decision this week to leave the Cavaliers after seven seasons to join the Miami Heat.

“To hear my former owner’s comments, I absolutely know I made the right decision,” James said Friday night during a press conference at American Airlines Arena.

Gilbert wrote an open letter to Cavaliers fans after James announced his decision Thursday night on national television, calling his decision, “a cowardly betrayal.” He also called James “a former hero,” taking shots at his self-serving manner in which he made the announcement.

“I don’t really have a reaction to what Dan said,” James continued. “When things hit the fan, you see a guy’s true colors. I have no reaction because at the end of the day, Dan’s comments won’t stop me and my family from sleeping at night. It just won’t do it. It’s just going to make us powerful, more powerful….read on for the letter that Dan Gilbert wrote for the fans of Cleveland.

NBA Lottery With his championship ring on her hand and her late husband’s dreams of another on her mind, Irene Pollin stood in shock as the Washington Wizards won the draft lottery.

Now that we know the draft order, who will go where? Check out NBADraft.net’s mock lottery.

Towering over her to the side, Mikhail Prokhorov watched the New Jersey Nets lose yet again.

The Wizards won the draft lottery Tuesday night, moving up from the No. 5 spot to earn the top pick in next month’s draft, when it will likely choose between Kentucky freshman John Wall and national player of the year Evan Turner of Ohio State.

Washington was represented by Irene Pollin, who wore the 1978 Bullets championship ring of her late husband, longtime owner Abe Pollin. When the Wizards pulled off the surprising win, her jaw dropped and appeared to mouth ‘Oh my God!!’ with wide eyes.

Abe Pollin died at age 85 in November.
